Viagem Interior é um documentário fotográfico sobre desertificação e despovoamento que nasceu a partir da leitura de uma notícia. Ou melhor, de duas. Ambas diziam o mesmo: daqui a algumas décadas haverá deserto no Algarve. A primeira foi publicada há cerca de vinte anos e a segunda em 2016. As zonas mais atingidas pela degradação física do solo são também as que têm sofrido um esvaziamento de pessoas. Os alertas têm sido dados desde há muito, mas os problemas persistem.

São conhecidas as modificações no regime das precipitações, a subida das temperaturas, as ondas de calor e as secas. Estes acontecimentos têm impacto sobre a fauna, a flora e os solos: a biodiversidade fragiliza-se, a agricultura é afectada e o risco de incêndios aumenta.

A fuga para o litoral à procura de condições de vida melhores, o envelhecimento da população e o desaparecimento de serviços essenciais nas povoações mais pequenas são fenómenos difíceis de inverter. Assiste-se ao abandono da terra e à negligência das zonas florestais. O conhecimento ancestral e as tradições desaparecem. Cada um destes factores conduz ao agravamento de outros, num ciclo de degradação cada vez maior, que segue lento e imparável, como o ponteiro das horas num relógio.

Este projecto propõe uma reflexão sobre as dificuldades que afectam dois terços do Algarve, uma região tão na moda e tão mal conhecida e amada. Pretende também fazer uma "viagem interior" que revele o que ainda resta da identidade e da cultura locais, nascidas da aprendizagem feita pela experiência, talhadas a custo contra as adversidades naturais.

As imagens, captadas em 2016 e 2017, foram reunidas numa exposição itinerante que passou pela Assembleia da República, entre 7 e 14 de Junho de 2017, além de ter percorrido diversas localidades no Algarve (ver calendário).

Interior Journey is a photographical documentary about desertification and depopulation that was triggered by a news article. Actually two articles containing the same message: a few decades from now a desert will be formed in the Algarve. The first was published some twenty years ago, the second in 2016. The areas most affected by the soil’s physical deterioration are the ones that have suffered from depopulation. Warnings have been issued since a long time, but the problems persist.

The changing rainfall scheme, rising temperatures, heat waves and droughts are well known. As is their impact on the wildlife, the flora and the soils: the weakening biodiversity affects agriculture and increases the risk of fires.

The elopement towards the coast in search of better living conditions, the population’s aging and the disappearance of essential services in the smallest villages or settlements set a hard to invert phenomenon. We witness the abandonment of land and the neglect of forestry. Traditions and ancestral knowledge have been lost. Each of these factors aggravates others in an ever increasing degradation, slowly but unstoppably proceeding like the hands on a clock.

This project suggests a reflection on the difficulties that affect two thirds of the Algarve, a region which today is so fashionable, yet so poorly known and loved. It also intends to make an “inland journey”, showing what is left of its local identity and culture, innate to learning through experience and carved with hardship against natural adversities.

Captured in 2016 and 2017, the photographs have been united in an itinerating exhibition which, after travelling through several Algarvian locations, traversed the Republic’s Assembly between the 7th and 14th of June 2017 (see the calendar).
